Pick and Choose Genetics, Anyone?

Sometimes don't you wish you could pick and choose the genes your kids get? "Okay, they get your moist skin, but my level of moles and freckles. Your lack of food allergies, and my hair color." Unfortunately, we just don't get to do that.

Today we went to the dentist. Ah, what a lovely way to celebrate the day off of school, right? Missy has one cavity. Sunny gets to add 3 more fillings to her record, which I believe was 4 before. Yikes. Me? Guess how many cavities I had as a kid? NONE! Want to know when I got my first filling? Right before my mission. Even then, the dentist said, "Well, these aren't real cavities, but we don't want them to go bad while you're in France." After 5 kids, my mouth is a different story. But my childhood and adolescent record still stands: ZERO CAVITIES.

Why couldn't all my kids get my teeth???

Dentist, Anyone?

Well, once again I'm trying to find a good dentist for Ben and me. Our last venture didn't turn out so well. He and his staff were very nice, but the more time goes by, the less impressed I am with the work he did on my teeth. I LOVE the work from my dentist uncle, but 5 hours is a bit of a drive with small kids for a dental appointment--especially with gas prices going the way they are.

Anyone have any recommendations for a great dentist in the Bountiful or downtown Salt Lake areas?

Dental Dilemma Follow-up

So the dentist called this morning...I have 3 options: 1)Give an IV for full sedation, 2)Force her to take the oral sedative, or 3)Wait 6 months and have her checked again. Obviously the cavities won't go away, but maybe they won't be a whole lot worse. Right now they're so small that they weren't even going to give her local anesthetic.

My mom wants to know if they can just give her a shot instead of a full IV. I should have asked. In the meantime, the dentist said, "It would be best if you could just get her to take the medicine." Duh, like I didn't know that. I dare HIM to try and give it to her!

Dental Dilemma

All the girls went to the dentist a few weeks ago. Kandy and Missy came away clean, but Sunny has cavities! This did not surprise me as Sunny is the junior sugar addict around here, and she hates brushing her teeth. So we had to make an appointment to go back.

They gave her a prescription she was supposed to take an hour before the appointment to make her sleepy. She refused. I called, and they said to bring her anyway. They tried the "happy gas." That lasted about five minutes till she wiggled out of it. They gave her a chance to sit still. Ha! Sunny? That kid is perpetual motion.

They sent us home with a new appointment and a refilled prescription since she did have a teensy taste of it. As my "flusteration" wore off, I realized that making another appointment for a week later is stupid. She will not have changed personality or tastes by then, which means she still will not take the medicine, the gas, or sit still.

I believe in dental health. I understand at least some of the ramifications of untreated cavities. But what is a mother to do??? I called and cancelled the appointment today, and I asked for the dentist to call me.
